Fun Friday: Cake Decorating

Fun Friday is a program set up for interns where every Friday we get off of work 2 hours early to come together, eat, and learn a new lesson about food. This week we learned about cake decorating and let me just say that it is a LOT harder than I had expected. My cake is on the right and clearly displays my amateur frosting skills. Despite this fact, at the end of the day cake is cake and a chocolate-kahlua combo can do no wrong.

  1. Shannon, the cake on the right shows how awesome you are at cake decorating. The cake and its decoration looks beautiful :)

  2. Shannon, I have really enjoyed reading through your blog. It makes me want to run to the grocery store, buy a whole bunch of new ingredients, and begin experimenting in new, creative ways in my own kitchen. It truly seems like you are enjoying yourself and learning a lot in the process!

    1. Thank you Ms. Stuart! I'm glad you like it so far. I am having so much fun and you were so right about San Francisco! It really is such a great city I love it here.

  3. I LOVE reading your blog Shannon. But it makes me hungry. ;) What techniques have you learned so far that are contributing to your vegan recipe creation?

    1. Thank you Mrs. Jewett! So far the majority of my learning has to do with different flavor combinations and uses of ingredients in general. I have a couple of recipes in mind that I would like to try and can discuss with you but for now I'm just trying to get an idea of all the options I have to work with. At Kitchen Sync I learned a lot about how to make food healthy, and at Big Table I am learning how to balance flavors. I'm still trying to grasp the basics of recipe creation as for now and then I will start experimenting with how to manage for dietary restrictions (Vegan/Vegetarian). AND! Big Table has an amazing pastry chef who always creates vegan options so I am looking forward to picking his brain for some useful tips :)
